How often
Once or twice a year keeps most driveways and patios clear. Shaded paving and north-facing patios typically go green again faster than sunny ones.
Why it matters
Green and black growth on paving holds moisture, and a damp, mossy path is slippy underfoot, especially steps and side passages.
Moss and weeds root into the joints between blocks and cobbles. Left for a few seasons they push the joints open and the surface starts to look tired.
A clean driveway and path are the first thing people see at a viewing.
Black spots on patios and paths are often lichen, which grips the surface harder than the green film from algae. Both grow fastest where paving stays damp and shaded.

Why does paving go green?
Algae and moss grow on paving that stays damp, especially in shade, under trees or on north-facing patios. The green film comes back over time, which is why most paving needs cleaning once or twice a year.
Will the sand between my blocks wash out?
Block paving joints often need topping up with sand after a deep clean, since moss and weeds come out of the joints with the dirt. Ask about it when Adam quotes.
